Take a DeEper dive

We are all about education here at Tranquil Oakes and we want YOU to be informed.  Find a topic you are interested in below, click it,

and be taken to some helpful information on that topic

including how John F Barnes Myofascial Release can be beneficial.

a note about technique and what to expect

While individual needs are always addressed, the nature of John F Barnes Myofascial Release involves a whole-body approach which is of tremendous value to our clients.

These proven techniques look beyond the place where you feel pain.

The body is interconnected through a continuous network of fascia that surrounds and supports muscles, organs, nerves, blood vessels, and other structures. When one area becomes restricted, strained, or altered by injury, surgery, repetitive movement, or everyday stress, it can influence how other areas move and function.

That's why the area that hurts isn't always the area that needs the most attention.

During a JBMFR session, we don't simply focus on the location of your symptoms. We look at the body as a whole and consider how areas of tension or restriction may be influencing one another.

Your session may include areas that seem unrelated to your primary complaint. You may even notice sensations or changes somewhere different from where the work is being performed. This is part of the interconnected nature of the fascial system.

JBMFR uses gentle, sustained pressure and attentive listening rather than forcing the tissue to change. The goal is to create a safe environment where your body can respond at its own pace.

We don't chase the pain. We listen to the whole body.

For example:

We May Look at Your Hips When Your Pain Is in Your Jaw or Head

If you're experiencing TMJ discomfort, headaches, or migraines, it may seem logical to focus only on your jaw, neck, and head. But the body doesn't work in isolated sections.

The pelvis and hips provide a foundation for how the rest of the body moves. When there are changes in movement, tension, or balance around the hips and pelvis, the body may develop compensatory patterns through the spine, shoulders, neck, and jaw.

For example, changes in how you stand or walk may influence how your pelvis moves, which can affect the way the spine and upper body organize themselves. Over time, this can contribute to increased muscular and fascial tension in areas farther away from the original restriction.

That doesn't mean a hip restriction causes a migraine or TMJ disorder. Rather, it is one reason a whole-body approach can be valuable when looking at persistent symptoms.

This Is Where JBMFR Takes a Different Approach

Instead of assuming the location of your pain is the source of the problem, JBMFR considers how different areas of the body may be connected.

Your session may include the pelvis, hips, abdomen, back, shoulders, neck, or other areas—even when your primary complaint is your jaw or head.

You may also experience sensations or changes in one area while another area is being addressed. The goal isn't to force the body into alignment. It's to gently work with areas of restriction and give the body an opportunity to respond.

Sometimes the place that hurts isn't the place that needs the most attention.

Why One Session May Not Tell the Whole Story

The Truth Behind Expectations

Sometimes you notice a meaningful change after your very first JBMFR session. Other times, the changes are subtle at first—or you may not notice much difference right away.

That doesn't necessarily mean the session wasn't beneficial.

When pain, tension, or restriction has been present for a long time, your body may have developed layers of compensation and protective patterns. These patterns didn't develop overnight, so they may not change completely in one session.

JBMFR is a process of listening and responding rather than forcing the body to change. Each session gives us an opportunity to learn more about how your body is responding and where additional restrictions or compensations may be present.

You may also notice changes between sessions as your body continues to process the work.

Don't Give Up After One Session

If you don't experience the change you hoped for after your first session, it doesn't automatically mean JBMFR isn't right for you.

Sometimes the first session gives us valuable information. Sometimes the response is gradual. And sometimes a different area needs attention before you notice a meaningful change in the place that brought you in.

At the same time, JBMFR isn't about committing to an endless series of appointments. Your response matters. We'll pay attention to what you're experiencing and use that information to determine whether continuing makes sense for you.

My goal isn't to keep you coming back simply because you came once.

It's to help you understand your body, listen to its responses, and determine what approach is most supportive for you.
